INSIGHT at ELSA in Bonn

INSIGHT is a new photo production experiment being set up at ELSA in Bonn.

ELSA

The Electron Stretcher Facility (ELSA) in Bonn delivers an electron beam with energies up to 3.2 GeV. The accelerated electrons can be extracted to the experimental stations in polarised or unpolarised form with beam currents of up to several nanoamperes.

Until 2026, ELSA will host two hadron physics experiments (CB-ELSA, BGOOD), and several measurement stations will also be available for irradiation tests.

INSIGHT

Starting in 2026, the new INSIGHT experiment will be set up at ELSA.

The planned INSIGHT experiment combines the strengths of the existing BGOOD and CB-ELSA experiments and expands them with additional important components. INSIGHT will enable baryon spectroscopy to be measured with polarised and unpolarised photon beam and target combinations, with neutral and charged particles in the final state. This unprecedented combination and breadth will enable INSIGHT to make important contributions, especially for baryons with strangeness.

Photon Tagger

An important component of the INSIGHT experiment is a new photon tagging system that allows us to determine with very good temporal resolution when a photon hits the target and what its energy is. To this end, our group is building a new tagger consisting of plastic scintillators and silicon photomultipliers.
